The following entry is in History of Shelby County Ohio And Representative Citizens (1913) at page 606:

"H.W. CAVEN, one of the best known citizens of Orange township, Shelby county, O., now serving in his second term as township trustee, resides on his mother's farm of 100 acres, which lies six miles southeast of Sidney, and here he was born in 1877. James M. Caven, father of H.W. Caven, was born in Miami county, O., three miles south of the present farm of the family, and after reaching manhod engaged there in farming until 1874, when he came to Orange township, purchasing 100 acres of land and cultivating and improving it until 1904, when he retired and then moved to Fletcher, O., where his death occurred in 1908, when he was aged seventy-three years. He had put the farm in fine condition, erecting all the buildings which now stand except the residence which he remodeled. He married Annetta S. Sayers, who was born in Miami county and is now a highly esteemed resident of Fletcher. They had four children, namely, William M., who lives in Green township; James S., who is a resident of Miami county; H.W.; and Mrs. Bertha M. Wyatt, who lives at Detroit, Mich. H.W. Caven attended the public schools of Orange township and afterward a business college at Piqua, O., being thus well prepared for other lines of activity than agriculture, but farming and stock raising perfectly satisfies him and he makes a success of the business, taking care of the home farm for his mother. Grain, hay, fruits and other products are raised and Mr. Caven usually has some as excellent stock as is found in the township. On March 11, 1903, Mr. Caven married Miss Lottie E. Fergus, who was born in 1878, on a farm west of Kirkwood, in Shelby county, O. She is a daughter of T.H. and Mary (Valentine) Fergus, one of a family of four children, the others being: Frank P., Leonard C. and Mrs. Olive Knox, the latter of Dayton, O. Mr. and Mrs. Caven have three children: Frances S., who was born April 20, 1905; Vertus V., who was born August 20, 1908; and Kathryn Lois, who was born September 15, 1911. In his views on public questions, Mr. Caven has always been a democrat, and his party standing and the place he occupies in the regard of his fellow citizens, may be indicated by the fact that since he was elected township trustee in 1909, he has been continued in office."

Obituary from Lottie Fergus Caven scrapbook/album:

"CAVEN

Vertus V. Caven, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Harley W. Caven, prominent residents of this county, died at their home, 6 miles southeast of Sidney, Sunday noon, after a brief illness of brain fever. He was taken sick Wednesday of last week at the Union schoold where he attended school and went home during the afternoon. Brain fever developed resulting in his death. He was born August 20, 1908 at the Caven homestead and spent all his life in that neighborhood where he was very popular among a large circle of friends. He was a member of the Spring Creek Baptist Sunday school and church. His sudden taking away has cast a gloom over the school and his many friends of the neighborhood. He is survived by his father and mother and two sisters Francis and Katherine. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in Fletcher cemetery."

Newspaper article in Lottie Fergus Caven scrapbook/album:

"There was sadness cast over this neighborhood Sunday afternoon, when the news was spread that Vertice V. Caven had passed away at 1 o'clock. He was taken seriously ill on Thursday night and never regained consciousness. He was the only son of Harley W. and Lottie Caven, was born August 20, 1908, died March 5, 1922, aged 13 years, 6 months, 15 day. He gave his heart to God in the Spring Creek Baptist church in March 1921. He always attended the Union school, where he was loved by his school mates and teachers. He was a faithful pupil and obedient son. Always ready to carry his share of life's burdens, greeting all with a pleasant smile. He leaves to mourn their loss his father, mother and two sisters, Frances and Katherine, also many relatives and a host of friends. Ture another life's link broken Another tie from earth departed. But the Savior dear has promised To cheer the sad and broken hearted. His precious eyes are closed forever, His hands laid fondly o'er his breast, And in the dark grave so silent, They are laid to ever rest. God of all comfort keep and guide us Until we cross the silent sea. Until the harbor we shall safely enter. And with loved ones, ever more shall be. Burial was made in Fletcher cemetery. Those who acted as pall-bearers were from his Sunday school class, Geo. Bowers, Robert DeWeese, Edward Henderson, Walter Beaman, Harold Houser, and Horace Woodmancy."

Information perThe Genealogical Record of George and Elizabeth Caven, Miami Co., OH. (1989), pg. 59.

The following newspaper clipping is from the Lottie Fergus Caven album:

"Sad news reached this vicinity the past week when we learned that Otto Caven, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Caven of Oklahoma, Miss., was accidentally killed Sunday night, March 4, while working in a car yard. The deceased was a married man and leaves a wife and three sons. The father, Milton Caven, was born and raised on a farm in Brown township now owned by his brother, George B. Caven. Another brother living in Brown township is James Caven of Fletcher. Besides these two brothers he has many relatives and friends in this locality who extend their sincere sympathy to the aged parents as well as to the family of the deceased."
