    Notes:

Oddly, his Florida driver license issued in 1976 shows his date of birth as May 2 1902, rather than 1905. His court-recognized Registration of Birth dated December 8 1941 states clearly his date of birth as May 2, 1905, and this is the date found in all family records.

In a "man on the street" piece in a New Smyrna Beach FL newspaper, the topic was "Should we resume diplomatic relations with Cuba?", Charles is quoted as replying "Yes. If we did so then Cuba would cuddle right up to us and would never be a threat. In fact, Cuba should have become a State long before Hawaii way out there. It has good tobacco and sugar for us, among other things."
The quote was accompanied by a photograph of Charles, cigar in mouth.

During a visit on her 92nd birthday, she recalled some childhood memories:

"We came to this country when I was just three years old, and I remember falling down the gangway when we arrived."

"When I was a little girl, I remember skipping along the sidewalk and tripping over something and really hurting my knee. But I didn't want to tell my mother, because I was afraid she would really get mad. When I got home, she looked at my knee and asked what happened, and I said 'nothing', but my knee kept swelling and getting worse and worse. Finally my dad had to take me to the doctor."

When younger she was called Lucy, and went by Lou later in life.

    Notes:

Excerpts from the October 30, 1971 Times Leader (Chardon Ohio) newspaper column titled "Posts' 60 years together a 'good life'":

Most of the large bridges in the county built since 1940 were constructed under his supervision while he was an engineer with the State of Ohio.

The first graduate of Chester High School in 1900, he was born in the Post family homestead, a beautiful century home, on Sperry Road in Chesterland.

After graduation he taught in the district school for awhile before obtaining an engineering degree at Valparaiso University. Then back to teaching a bit before moving to Cleveland to work for the city's engineering department.

The marriage bond of James and Emma Post was 60 years strong Thursday as the quietly celebrated their anniversary at their home in Chesterland.

Mr. Post was a widower with four children when they met in Cleveland. A year later they were married and "Emma raised the children as though they were her own" he said.

At 90, Mr. Post is Chester Township's oldest native born resident.

"Sixty years ago today," Mr. Post recalled, "there was snow on the ground. It was a dreary day. Today it's the complete opposite."

"My father was a veteran of the Civil War. He voted for Lincoln in his second term." The family has been Republican in its politics ever since, he explained.

"If you have a difference of opinion, keep it to yourself" Mr. Post advised young marrieds.

The Posts life has had its sorrows. They were wiped out in the depression and Jean, the only child born to them, died at the age of nineteen. The loss is still keenly felt.

"I never thought we'd live to see our 60th anniversary," Mrs. Post said wonderingly. "Sixty years, woman." Mr. Post teased. "That's a long time."

James married Ethel M. Kieffer on 19 Aug 1903 in Geauga County, Ohio. Ethel (daughter of Edward H. Kieffer and Mary Knapp, daughter of Charles W. Labau and Lillie Minnie (nee Unknown) Labau) was born on 14 Sep 1883 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio; died on 25 Feb 1911 in Ohio. [Group Sheet]

    • _UID: 5CFEC480E4214858AF70492CB99995BF7D8F
    • Adopted: 1883, Ohio

    Notes:

Family history from at least the 1960s asserts that her biological parents were French, who had come to the U.S. before her birth. Later, they returned home, and five month old Ethel was adopted by the Kieffer family. Family history states the biological father as Charles W. Labau and mother as Lillie Minnie (nee unknown), but outside of family history the author has found no documentary evidence to support the adoption claim, until more recently.

The original book Record of Births of Cuyahoga County* clearly shows Edward and Mary as the parents. However, this ledger book contains entries that are not in chronological order. For example, the 1884 and 1883 entries are mixed on the page, and the first 1883 entry in the "1883 continued" block is from December. Further, the entry immediately preceding Ethel's is from November, though Ethel was born in August. The author's conclusion is that this ledger entry was made after Ethel's adoption, possibly even the following year.

Eventually a scanned image of the original birth record** was found that identifies Ethel's biological parents. Even this, though, has the failing that it doesn't identify the child's name, only the date, place, and parent information. However, all of the information contained on this card, including the date of birth and identification of the parents (Charles/Lillie Labau), match family legend.

In a letter to her daughter Lucinda, Martha writes:
"Dear Lucy: Just a few lines in answer to your letter and was very glad to hear from you. I hope tis will find you all well. [..] You said you wish I was with you; I wish I was. If I had knownthings was going to turn out like they have done I would of tried and gone back with you last summer but I could never travel now in my condition but please Lucy Dear don't say a word to thegirls when you write, I should never of come in the first place. I thought everything was going to be so rosy for me. I made a mistake now I have to put up with it, I really should of stayedin Cleveland and got the pension then it would not of cost the family very much as it is having someone to take care of me, takes more money living with one of the family wouldn't cost asmuch. Well Dear I hope Charlie likes his job. [..] Amy [presumably Amy Caroline Catherwood, another daughter] is looking for a apartment this week, she hasn't been able to go out with herfriends she has been with me."

In a letter to her daughter Lucinda, written about a year before her own death, Martha writes:
"...I thank you a lot for the dollar. I am going to get a new bread tin with it as I need one.
I was glad to hear that Ray had been visiting you. You know it makes me happy when I know that he is all right. I hope he gets that job at the board of education and I hope he will try and gethis teeth fixed. I had a letter from him a few weeks ago.
I hope you are all well as I am a little better but my legs are very tottery but I don't care as long as I can toddle around my own house. I haven't been able to go to the corner for 5 weeksbut I will be contended if I can manage to do with I have to do around the house. I have Florence to go to the store and when Teddy comes he can go for little things. I haven't seen Marion[Ruth Catherwood, another daughter] since she moved but that doesn't worry me. I have had a couple of letters from her. I wanted to stay at Ed's [possibly Edwin Follick, a son-in-law] mother'sa month but I couldn't stand the livestock around. And besides I had to plan all the meals and help with them so I had no rest and you couldn't lie down in the afternoon so many flies; shedone all the work, I couldn't.
Did you go anywhere Labor Day? I didn't, I couldn't go besides I wasn't well enough to go picnicking. Ed, Esther [Agnes Catherwood, another daughter], Ida and Miss [unreadable] and Teddy[perhaps Edwin Duane Follick, Ed's son] went to Griffith Park, they had a picnic, I didn't want Esther to spoil her pleasure on account of me.
Well, Dear, I wish you could get a house. Loads of love to you all as always, Mother.
I wrote to Ray I hope he gets it. "
