Notes
- William Belew Chism was born and raised in Virginia, probably Halifax
County. He accompanied his parents when they migrated to Kentuckyaround
1798, at the approximate 14 years of age. According to one referencethey
first went to the Kentucky river area, but later moved to SouthCentral
Kentucky in Barren County (now Monroe County). He was united inmarriage
to Priscilla Breed, daughter of Nathan Breed and Mary (Harlan) Breed.
The Breed's, Chism's, Howard's, Ray's, Gist's, Hays', Hart's,Mulkey's,
Belieu's (Below, Belew, Ballaw, Belue), Marshall's, Newton's, Ellis'",
Thompkins, Stearns", and Thompson's were all close families from years
back when followers of the Fairforest Baptist Church in Union County
South Carolina. Eight or nine of these families intermarried. Threeof
James Cchism of Virginia sons married three daughters of Nathan Breed.
One of these Breed sisters was William Belew's wife. When in south
central Kentucky they organized the Mill Creek Meeting House, now oneof
the State Historical Sites. In the cemetery at Mill Creek Church, several
of the Chism's, Breed's, Howard's, and other family members are buried
there, also members of allied families of the Chisms. Most of these
families had common roots. William and Priscilla establishedthemselves
in a farming operation in that area near what today is Tompkinsville.
They lived close to the present location of the Old Mulkey MeetingHouse
Church. William and Priscilla lived in this area all of their lives.
We do not know for sure where they are buried. Most familyresearchers
agree that it was probably in the Old Chism Burial Plot located todayon
the property owned by the Ray family (Newton Ray Place). In 1992,this
is the Stephens place. Apparently no markers were erected over their
graves or perhaps they have been destroyed. William was usuallyreferred
to as "Billy Belew".
