Bowles DNA Project

Surname Variants:

This project is set up to help those with the Bowles surname, or any of its variants, to determine if they share common ancestors. We are particularly interested in Bowles lines that date to Colonial America and beyond, but welcome any who seek to discover their Bowles roots.

Results

I've grouped the results to help us more easily see the matches. Within the groups, marker mismatches are shown in red. The green colored haplogroups have been verified by additional testing; the red colored ones are unverified, but likely. Selecting the linked kit numbers will take you to pages that identify the Bowles ancestors being researched by the Bowles descendent for that kit.

Markers

Each marker has a name assigned to it by the scientific community, such as DYS# 391, DYS# 439 or GATA H4. The scientists classify these markers as Short Tandem Repeats (STR) because at each of these marker locations a short DNA code repeats itself. The result for a marker is the number of times the code repeats at that location and is called the allele value.

This chart shows the name given to each marker. For example marker #1 is DYS# 393.

Haplogroups

Thus far we have the potential for Bowles lines in three different haplogroups. In the chart above, in the fourth column under Haplo, you will see one of the following haplogroups indicated. If it is in green, then the haplogroup has been proven accurate through separate testing; those in red are estimates based on similar marker patterns examined in a study done by Dr. Michael Hammer, a biotechnology research scientist at the University of Arizona.

I

The I, I1, and I1a lineages are nearly completely restricted to northwestern Europe. These would most likely have been common within Viking populations. One lineage of this group extends down into central Europe.

J2

This lineage originated in the northern portion of the Fertile Crescent where it later spread throughout central Asia, the Mediterranean, and south into India. As with other populations with Mediterranean ancestry this lineage is found within Jewish populations.

R1b

This is the most common haplogroup in European populations. It is believed to have expanded throughout Europe as humans re-colonized after the last glacial maximum 10-12 thousand years ago. This lineage is also the haplogroup containing the Atlantic modal haplotype.

These have value only to the extent that they suggest the origins of your deep ancestors. Keep in mind that genetic genealogy is still in its infancy, so use this information carefully.
