(For Kit #355920)

This family is documented at Kelburn(e), Ayrshire, Scotland, beginning no later than 1286.  It is reputed, however, to have been seated there since about 1140, after King David I invited families from northern England to settle in the lowlands.  The early ancestry is covered in J.B. Paul's The Scots Peerage, v. 4, pp. 183-221 (1907), available at https://play.google.com/books/reader?printsec=frontcover&output=reader&id=EbEEAAAAIAAJ.
