The following is a partial biography of the Bowles families written by
Joseph Martin Bowles of Petaluma, Sonoma County, California in March
1895. This was found in and excerpted from the work entitled Joshua
Rawlings and His Descendants and Allied Families by Mary LaPage Rollins
(dated March 1938, LDS Reference #33585) which can be found in the
Family History Library of the Mormon Church in Salt Lake City. Mrs.
Rollins' husband was the youngest son of Lloyd Rollins. Lloyd's daughter
married Joseph M. Bowles.

A PARTIAL BIOGRAPHY OF THE BOWLES FAMILY

Written by Joseph Martin Bowles of Sonoma County, State of California,
Nov. 12, 1895.

For the benefit of my children and relatives who may be interested in
knowing - I hereby give to them a condensed biography of the old
settlers of the Bowles families in the United States so far as my
information extends, which I have obtained through the older members of
the Bowles to whom we are related.

In the early settlement of the United States there were three Bowles
brother, who imigrated from England to the United States. One brother
settled in Pennsylvania, one in New England, and one in Virginia. The
late Samuel Bowles, conductor of the Springfield Republican, was of the
New England branch. We are the offspring of the Virginia branch. My
great grandfather David, and my grandfather Jesse Bowles, resided in
Buckingham County, Virginia, and after the close of the Revolutionary
War they moved with their families to Bourbon County, Kentucky, and
settled in the neighborhood known as Cane Ridge.

My grandfather Jesse Bowles married Hannah Perkins and to them were born
ten children as follows: David, Elizabeth, Stephen, Sally, Jesse (my
father), Hughes, Anderson, Robert, Joseph, and Mourning.

All of my father's brothers and sisters died in Bourbon County,
Kentucky, excepting Joseph and Hughes. Uncle Joseph was killed and
scalped by the Indians Massacre at the battle of River Raisin after the
surrender of the Kentucky troops by General Winchester to Colonel
Practer of the British forces in 1813. Uncle Hughes and family moved to
Illinois from Bourbon County, Kentucky, in 1830 and settled in DeWitt
County on Salt River.

My father Jesse Bowles was born near Richmond, Virginia, in 1782. My
mother's maiden name was Chloe Parker and was born near Baltimore,
Maryland, in 1781. She had two brothers, Captain Jack and Archibald
Parker, who served in the War of 1812. The Parkers also settled in
Bourbon County, Kentucky at an early date.

My father and mother were married at Cain Ridge, Bourbon County, in 1805
and to them seven children were born as follows: Holman born in 1806,
Elizabeth in 1808 (who died in infancy) Eliza, 1810, Drusilla, 1812,
Augustin, 1815, Joseph Martin, 1817, America, 1821, Holman married
Selina Wilson, a half sister to the later James Nicholas in 1827, Eliza
married Beauford Morris in 1830, Drusilla married Coleman Talbot in
1830, all in Kentucky. On October, 1830, my father and all of the family
moved to Adams County, Illinois and settled near Quincy.

My father, Jesse Bowles, was a Christian preacher for thirty five years
prior to his death (and was a co-laborer with the celebrated Rev. Barton
Stone). He died May 4, 1837 and was buried beside my father. My mother
died Dec. 14, 1849 and was buried beside my father in the Locust Grove
Cemetery on the old homestead farm four and one half miles north of
Quincy, Adams County, Illinois. Sister Eliza Morris died in August 1837
of locked-jaw caused by a wound received in the foot by stepping on a
rusty nail. She left four children, all boys, as follows: Warren, Frank,
George and Beauford. Holman had by his first wife Selina, five children,
namely: William, Jesse, Ann, Elizabeth and Warren. He sold his farm in
Illinois in 1869 and moved to Carroll County, Missouri, when he died in
1871 leaving a large family of children by his second wife. Brother A.E.
Bowles went back to Kentucky in 1837 and married Rachel Brown, a niece
of Beauford Morris, and returned to his Illinois farm in the Spring of
1838. There were born to them three children as follows: Ann, Holman,
and Jesse. His wife died in 1847. He married his second wife, Lucey
Prentiss, a sister of General P. Prentiss and to them were born seven
children - Lucy died and A.E. Bowles married his third wife Augusta
Burnett. By her he had three children. Bro. Augustin Bowles died October
10, 1871 and was buried by the side of his former wives in the Locust
Grove Cemetery. Sister America Bowles married Thomas H. Tate in 1837 and
to them were born eight children as follows: George S., Eliza J., John,
Jesse, Augustin,. E, Maggie, Nevada, and Jos afa. Thomas H. Tate died in
California in 1857. J.M. Bowles married Octavia P. Rollins of Clark Co.,
Missouri, Apr. 6, 1843. She was a daughter of Lloyd Rollins, formerly of
Bourbon County, Kentucky, and to us was born six children as follows:
Louisa C., born Feb 1, 1844, America V. Dec. 8, 1845, Scott, Jan. 21,
1848, Jesse M. March 1, 1850, Ann E. Sept. 30, 1852, and Bourbon, Nov.
23, 1857. America V. died Aug. 14, 1850, and was buried in the Locust
Cemetery.

In April 18, 1852 Colman Talbot and family, T.H. Tate and family,
Michael Couchman, John Oliver, and five sisters of my wife and their
families left Quincy, Illinois, with ox teams for California. There were
sixteen wagons in our train. We had a very pleasant journey crossing the
plains excepting our fear of cholera which followed the trains to the
Black Hills. We lost two teamsters by the dreadful plague. In passing up
the Platte River it was a daily occurrence to witness from one to ten
fresh graves, the victims of cholera. Otherwise we got along jolly and
happy, notwithstanding we had to be vigilant in guarding our camps and
stock from Indians while going through their settlements.

Our train was lucky in getting through without any serious loss of
property whilst other trains suffered more or less by the theft and
depredations of the treacherous red skin.

We crossed the Nevada Mts. by the Beckwith Pass - the first mining we
saw was at '76. The next we came to was Rabbit Creek Mines. Here we laid
off to rest for a few days and some of the trains even went to work in
the tunnels. Among them were Michael Couchman, John Oliver, and others.
Couchman and Oliver both died at Rabbit Creek from exposure in the damp
tunnels. Here our trains separated - some going to one place and some to
another.

Bros. Talbot, Tate, and myself continued to Sonoma Valley where we
arrived about the 15th of Oct. 1852. Sister America Tate, after
remaining a widow four or five years, married John Simpson of San
Francisco. He died in 1886 and Sister America died Apr. 7, 1887 at White
Sulphur Springs near Santa Rosa, Sonoma Co., California. She was 83
years, 6 months and 5 days of age. She was loved and respected by all
who knew her. Her husband, Coleman Talbot, and four children were at her
bedside when her gentle spirit took its flight to heaven. Her funeral
was attended by a large concourse of people who followed her remains
from the old homestead to the Bennett Valley Cemetery where she was laid
quietly to rest with profusion of flowers. Her husband and seven
children survived.

Coleman Talbot departed this life at the home of his daughter at
Sebastopol at 1:30 A.M. 1896 and was buried by the side of his wife in
Bennett Valley Cemetery at the age of 86 years.

I will now revert back to the pioneer settlement of the military tract
of Illinois. My father, after arriving at our destination in Adams Co.,
Illinois, in the Fall of 1830, was hard pressed to find a vacant house
to winter in. He finally secured an unfinished log cabin six miles N.E.
of Quincy, but before we could close up the cracks a cold blizzard
struck us and froze the mud as hard as bricks, so we gave up the idea of
dobing and lived in the cabin with tent cloth and wagon covers. This was
the noted winter of the deep snow which fell December and January
1830-31. After the snow had settled and crusted the top on the ground,
measuring three feet deep, we kept from freezing by rolling huge hickory
logs into the five foot sod fireplace which we had to keep at white heat
both day and night during the cold snap. We used snow shoes to travel
where the trails were unbroken. The dogs and wolves could travel on top
of the crust, but the deer, which were very numerous, would break
through after being chased by man and dog or wolves (which were quite
numerous) for two or three hundred yards, would give up and become a
prey to their pursuers.

Brother Augustin and myself had rare sport during the winter hunting and
catching deer with dogs. We kept the family well supplied with venison.
We got along nicely, having plenty of wild honey, hog, and hominy.

In the Spring of 1831, my father bought a half section of land for a
homestead - forty one miles north of Quincy, on which we erected a log
cabin. He also entered a quarter section for each of his children. In
the Spring of 1832 he purchased two or three acres of land near the log
cabin and planted black locust on it which he brought from Kentucky.
These black locust trees soon grew up and became a noted landmark and
was the first black locust grove started in the military tract and was
known far and near as the Locust Grove Farm.

H. A. BOWLES.

H. A. Bowles, a prominent farmer and dairyman of Elgin township, was born
in Dewitt county, Illinois, October 5, 1870, his parents being Robert and
Martha (Welch) Bowles, of English and Irish parentage respectively.
Representatives of the Bowles family emigrated from England to Virginia
at a very early day, afterward located in Kentucky and subsequently
settled in Dewitt county. Illinois, among its earliest residents.
Anderson Bowles, the grandfather of H. A. Bowles, was the first of the
name who took up his abode in this state, making the journey from
Kentucky with ox-teams. During the trip the family carried fire with them
from one camping place to another until they finally located in Dewitt
county and for thirty years this fire was kept going, as it was prior to
the time when matches came into general use. Anderson Bowles reared a
family of fourteen children, including the father of our subject, Robert
Bowles, who, in his younger days, was also a farmer and stockdealer. In
1888 he located in Chicago, where he is still engaged in the live stock
commission business under the firm name of Clark, Bowles & Company. He
and his wife reared a family of six children, namely: Ethel; Stella. the
wife of Rev. J. H. Odgers, a minister of the Methodist Episcopal church
at Joliet: Herman A.; Enid; Charles, who wedded Etta Barnes of Chicago;
and Bertie, who has passed away. Both Mr. and Mrs. Bowles reside in the
metropolis, the former having for a long period been actively connected
with its business interests.

H. A. Bowles attended the common schools of Clinton and Bloomington,
Illinois, until the age of fourteen or fifteen years, and then pursued a
course in a business college at Bloomington. At the age of eighteen years
he started out in life for himself, and remained in Montana and Wyoming
between the years 1892 and 1899, working each year during a season of
nine months. In 1899, however, he returned to Chicago and thence came
almost immediately to Elgin, settling on the farm of two hundred and
fifty-four acres, on which he has since resided and which he has brought
under a high state of cultivation. He is a lover of fine stock and makes
a specialty of breeding high grade cows and horses. He is recognized as a
substantial and enterprising agriculturist and dairyman of the county and
has met with a creditable and gratifying measure of success in the
conduct of his business interests.

In 1899 Mr. Bowles was united in marriage, to Miss Bessie Kirby of
Chicago, a daughter of T. E. and Annie E. (Anderson) Kirby. Her father is
engaged in the railway supply business, and she is one of a family of
three children, the others being: Daisy, the wife of W. W. Teal, of Oak
Park; and Charlotte. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Bowles has been born one son,
Thomas K. They are people of genuine personal worth and sterling traits
of character and have gained an extensive circle of friends during the
period of their residence in this county.

In the name of God Amen I Jesse BOWLES of Bourbon County being for many
years in an infirm state of health but of sound mind and good memory and

it has pleased God to bless me, do make and ordain this my last will and
testament, hereby revoking all former will or wills or testaments whatsoever.
Item, It is my will that my just debts be paid.
Item, I lend unto my loving wife, Hannah BOWLES so long as she remains my
widow and no longer, my house and that part of my plantation and tract of land

give unto my two sons, Jesse BOWLES and Hughs BOWLES the whole reversion of
my tract of land on which I now live which I have lent unto my wife Hannah
with the reserve hereafter to be made, said tract of land containing two
hundred and fifty acres to be divided by running a line from north to south so
as to give each of my said sons Jesse and Hughes one hundred and twenty five
acres and leaving the houses and garden in the east end of the land, which
said east end of the land I give unto my son Jesse, and the west end unto my
son Hughes, making no account for the houses, garden or orchard. Given to
them, and their heirs and assignees forever.
Item. I have already given or lent my son David BOWLES one negro girl
named Delia who has now got a living child, which two negroes I consider his

daughter not leave such living heir or heirs of her body begotten, then and in
that case said division of said negroes so lent unto my said daughter Sarah
.TURPIN to return to those of my children, Viz, Stephen or Robert BOWLES or

wife Hanna, my will is that he keep quiet and peaceable possession of his
house and that part of the plantation which he now occupies and free access to
wood for firing and timber for the use of plantation. My wish is that my son
Jesse continues on the plantation and manage for his mother my said wife
Hannah, but should they disagree, then my will is that my said son Jesse
should (have?) his possession where he now lives, and have laid off to him his
full proportion of the tillable land, pastures, meadows and orchard according
to the number of hands worked on the place and hold quiet possession of the
same until the whole falls to him.
Item, after my wife Hannah decease it is my will that the whole household

every article of my estate not already disposed of be sold and every lott of

deficiency in any one lott, and after each lott of negroes is made equal, then
the balance of said money to be
divided among all my children share and share alike to them and their heirs &

And lastly, I do appoint my three sons, David, Stephen and Hughes BOWLES
